Meaningful change rarely succeeds because of the plan alone. It succeeds because of the conditions leaders create before implementation begins.
Whenever I encounter a new initiative, challenge, or leadership dilemma, these are the questions I find myself asking.
Purpose
Do people understand why this change matters?
Identity
How might this change affect how people see themselves and their work?
Leadership
What conditions are leaders creating that will either strengthen or weaken implementation?
Communication
How will people make sense of this change over time—not just on launch day?
Capacity
What must people stop doing in order to do this well?
Learning
Are we designing learning that helps adults solve problems they actually have?
Systems
What parts of the system need to work together for this change to last?
Reflection
What are we noticing, learning, and adjusting as implementation unfolds?
